Does basalt ring a bell? Are you tantalized by tectonic plates? Is lava more than a lamp to you?

If so, then you are going to LOVE this bench just in at the Gardens. Habersham staffer Lucy Herring has labeled it a "geologist's dream" and rightly so.
Its legs are cut from columnar joints which form when
basalt cools quickly from the outside to the center, resulting in hexagonal columns. The most well known places in the United States which exhibit columnar jointing are
Devils Tower in Wyoming and
Devils Postpile in California.
Come see this work of nature's art in the Gardens and be sure to look up Lucy - she'll be happy to give you a quick lesson in geology and she knows her plants, too!
