Sometimes I’ll have a grower ship me one of a particular plant that I may not be familiar with or know whether the grower does a good job of growing that plant. I also look to see if the plant generates any interest with our customers.
It’s easy for these plants to get overlooked by customers so I’ve decided to point out some of these really great plants that we may have only one or two of.

There is one – Cercis Canadensis ‘Lavender Twist’ – a weeping redbud that is an absolutely fabulous and beautiful specimen. This tree is in a container and can be planted any time of the year.
Another one of a kind is Acer palmatum ‘Viridis’. This is a weeping Japanese maple and one of my favorites. It is also an incredible specimen and can be planted in the garden or in a pot on the patio.

We also have 2 tree form Dynamite Crape Myrtles. These will bloom from June through October and are a brilliant red. Once again, perfect in the garden or container.
I have a Windmill Palm with 5’+ of clear trunk and I’m considering offers - make me one!
A personal favorite of mine are Boxwood and we have 4’ Tall Boys now. These are very upright and make a real statement in pots or at an entrance.
I’m here on weekends and some week days and will be glad to show you some other trees and shrubs that I find interesting - just ask for me.

A bouquet of flowers is always a great gift for Mother’s day but they only last for a few days. Why not think out of the vase and into the garden?

Habersham Gardens’ selection of roses will bloom all summer and well into fall. We have easy-to-grow, reblooming roses in shades of red, pink, white, coral and yellow that will be enjoyed for Mother’s Day in years to come. We’re also a Premier Partner with David Austin Roses and we have some true classics that are spectacular bloomers. Plus, prices are great and probably much less than a bouquet of flowers!
Hydrangeas are blooming early this year but many will still be in full glory when Sara Henderson comes to talk
“All About Hydrangeas” on Saturday, May 26 at 11:00 a.m. Sara knows her hydrangeas and you are sure to enjoy and learn from her presentation.

We have a great selection of hydrangeas in stock now and will have more available at the time of Sara’s talk. Some of our standouts include new and hard-to-find varieties including Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Little Honey’ and ‘Ruby Slippers’ to name a few. How about giving your mom a gorgeous blooming hydrangea along with an invitation to join you on the 26
th to learn all about planting of care of her gift?
If you’re looking for some new inspiration, we have it! Come on by – we’re here six days a week – Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 til 6 and Sundays 11 til 6.
Hope to see you in our Gardens soon!

I just took a stroll through the Gardens and wanted to bring a few things to your attention...
Due to popular demand, we now have more climbing and rambling roses including Iceberg and America as well as Wedgewood, Strawberry, and two David Austin varieties which are fragrant - Generous Gardens and Golden Celebration.
Next week we’ll be getting new double pink Knockout Roses as well as new varieties of Oakleaf and Hydrangea arborescens (Ryan Gainey, Annabelle, Ellen Huff, Peewee).

We still have a great variety of clematis. Try planting a deciduous clematis to climb into your deciduous viburnum. The viburnum provides a great support for the clematis and neither plant interferes with the other. This is a great way to grow beautiful flowers in unexpected places. One of our original customers showed me this trick and it works great, but both plants need to be deciduous. We still have evergreen Clematis armandii (evergreen clematis) in white and pink. They are good looking and are showing a lot of new growth.
The Campsis Radicans (trumpet vine) looks pretty tame but just wait until they start to bloom.
Our selection of Japanese Maples is amazing, from the tried and true to cutting edge varieties that have been selected for their hardiness and unique characteristics. We offer these in sizes that you can easily take home in your car and plant yourself and the prices are truly remarkable. As an independent garden center, we have a competitive edge to the chain garden centers and big box stores in that we can handpick small quantities of these unique varieties – an advantage that our customers have enjoyed for many years.
Take a close look around Habersham Gardens. I just saw a beautiful 3-gallon golden Caryopteris ‘Fortune of Gold’ that had been overlooked. Truly a gem. There are other treasures to be found around our gardens as well, but you have to come exploring!

Attention Beer makers, grow your own hops! We now have humulus (hops) at Habersham Gardens. Two varieties of this perennial vine are available (Mt. Hood and Nugget). Not only are they beautiful ornamental plants, they’re also great for home brewing. The flowers are fragrant and when picked ripe, will add freshness and flavor to your home brew.
Other vines just received at Habersham Gardens include Clematis Armandii (evergreen clematis), climbing hydrangeas, passiflora (passion vine), vitis (grape vine) and a great selection of climbing roses including David Austins.
Our selection is stellar right now, come see us!

Walt's been on a mission lately to locate trees and shrubs well-suited to the urban landscape in container sizes that are easy to handle and transport. Here's what he had to say recently about some of his findings...
Calycanthus (sweetshrub) is a fabulous native plant. Athens has yellow blooms, is mildly fragrant and will take part sun/part shade. It has beautiful, interesting flowers and is great in a woodland border.
We've got many new cultivars of Japanese Maples just in that were developed here and in Japan. They offer a new beauty, are truly unique, work well in patios and pots and are hard to find. Sizes are easy to transport and prices are reasonable.
A gold leaf forsythia is hard to find. We have 'Golden Pixie' now in stock.
We're loving the roses. The David Austins are fabulous and the Knockouts are carefree, tough, hardy plants providing continual color from April to November. Remember to fertilize only in March or April and again in October when the weather cools. Give roses a fair amount of water and locate them near other plants needing similar amounts in order to create a sustainable environment.
Find out more at his Tree and Shrub Walkabout this Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

There has been a lot of information and mis-information going around on the Impatiens Downy Mildew infection.

Downy Mildew is a water mold, and is both irreversible and final to an infected impatiens bed. The plants experience both leaf and flower drop, leaving nothing but bare stems.
So far, cases have been confirmed in California, Illinois, Indiana, Cape Cod, Massachusetts and New York. There are reports, not yet confirmed, of it in North Carolina. This geography may have you somewhat comforted, but that is really an illusion of safety. The Big Boxes, as well as our local chain all buy from these states and import flowers in so your impatiens could be infected. Once planted in a bed, the plants (if infected) will reliably drop all leaves and blooms and the bed is then presumed to be off-limits for impatiens indefinitely.
This mildew thrives in wet, shady areas, especially those with overhead irrigation at night. The spread of this mildew will not occur under hot or dry conditions.
What should be learned from this? Investigate other types of shade annuals such as New Guinea Impatiens (they are immune), torenia, begonias, etc. However, if you are committed to Impatiens walleriana, purchase only locally grown impatiens; a deal is not a deal if your impatiens die of mildew!

It’s time to start getting your lawn sprinkler system in working order. Soon the grass will be growing and dormant lawns and landscapes will be fading away and will be back to our typical 6 months or so of beautiful green plants, green lawns and colorful flowers.
Don’t wait too late to get your irrigation system prepared and fully functional to help provide adequate and uniform water to your yard’s landscape. If you are like many people, you’re probably planning out new home and garden projects which may include modifications or improvements to your yard.
It’s typical this time of year for people to re-sod or lay new grass. This is a great time of year to do that but many people often make the mistake of not thoroughly checking lawn sprinklers before laying new grass or planting new shrubs. We experience many frantic calls from people worried because they spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars on new grass and or landscape material and then find out that their sprinklers are not working properly.
Before starting this year’s projects, be sure to have your system checked out and repair any problems prior to ordering and installing new grass, plants or other landscaping.
